SIS Implementation Project: Guiding Principles
The implementation of the SIS is an opportunity for us to ensure that our policies enhance student learning, faculty effectiveness as teachers and advisors, consortial collaboration, and data analytics. The following principles will guide us:
- Respect faculty autonomy. Faculties have authority over their curricula and the academic policies that make each of our colleges unique.
- Transparency. Our students and faculty have clear access to academic options and procedures available in the Consortium.
- Harmonization. We will minimize differences in the way we regulate academic processes and remove unnecessary barriers to cross-enrollment for the benefit of our students.
- Mutual respect. We respect that the faculty of the college where a course is taught sets the course’s credit value. We respect that the faculty of the college at which a student is enrolled determines the course’s usage.
- Access. System design will be compliant with accessibility regulations, supportive of students’ and faculty’s personal identities, and intuitive in its user interface.
- Multiple Citizenships. We will remove current constraints on faculty who straddle different disciplines, departments, or colleges (e.g., faculty who teach cross-listed courses; Keck Science faculty).
- Shared data governance. We will unlock the power of analytics in ways that are well designed, secure, consortial, and stable.
- Use Workday’s capabilities. Our default position is to use Workday functionalities, but not to follow them without understanding the full consequences.
- Sustainability. This system will have at least 20-year implications. We will design the best possible data architecture and integration framework and always consider current decisions in light of how they might restrict or enhance flexibility and stability over time.
- Simplicity. We will make the system as simple as possible for end users. We will also reach out to users as early and as much as possible to understand their needs.
- Embrace change. To accomplish all of the above, change will be needed. We will not fear change, as long as it enables people to contribute to the mission of our colleges.
